What is Retirement?
What is "Net Worth"?
There is something called the FIRE movement that you were never taught about.
(Financially Independent Retired Early)
There’s quite a bit of ground to cover but all is well. We’ll cover the different types of FIRE levels and how much money you need to live your lifestyle. It may seem overwhelming but take it one step at a time. It’s a marathon so set a proper pace, here are some shocking facts to kick us off.
First off there are 5 levels to this “FIRE” game. It will all really come down to what your preferences are and what kind of lifestyle you envision for yourself. I won’t go too into detail on each level to not bore you.
Level / Lifestyle
- Lean / Frugal
- Barista / Side Gigs
- Coast / Cashing Out
- Fire / Equivalent
- Fat / Joneses
I’ll let you decipher what it all means, essentially the last level is for someone looking to retire and still spend over $200,000 a year.
Now I started off this page with “where to get started”.
I can’t quite tell you how much money you need to retire since there is no exact dollar amount, but I can give you some formulas to help calculate what that would look like to maintain your lifestyle.
There’s 3 BIG questions you need to sit down and ask yourself. (Hope you’re sitting cause they’re pretty heavy questions if you are struggling with money)
- How much do you spend? (You want to spend about 3% of your portfolio)
- How much do you have saved?
- How much do you currently make?
There’s been plenty of studies done and one I read mentioned how every $100 subscription extra spent is an additional $40,000 invested needed to sustain your lifestyle in retirement!
The Trinity Study provides a historical perspective on safe withdrawal rates, and the 4% rule is a practical application of those findings. It’s a rule of thumb that offers retirees a starting point for planning their withdrawals to help ensure their savings last throughout retirement
